ON THIS DAY in 1779, Tekle Giyorgis I became Emperor of Ethiopia. He became Emperor of Ethiopia again in 1788, in 1794, in 1795, and in 1800. To have become an emperor once may be regarded as a significant accomplishment, but to become an emperor five times is mere tasteless ostentation.

The great thing about Mexican history during the First Republic is that, to be able to identify the holders of about half of the forty-eight presidencies, you need only memorize perhaps half a dozen names. Mexico is to be commended for granting the weary history student this convenience.
