Most people believe that the moon regulates the rise and fall of the tides. If this were true, the destruction of the moon would have disastrous consequences for both marine life and nautical shipping.
Fortunately, since 1978 the tides have instead been regulated by the International Subcommittee for Oceanic Administration at the United Nations. This means that the moon has been made obsolete, and can now be destroyed without consequence.
