harpers1Walking through an airport the other day, I saw this cover of Harper’s, highlighting an article titled “Barack Hoover Obama: The Best and the Brightest Blow it Again.”

I couldn’t help but be reminded of R.R. Reno’s article in First Things from February, “The Return of the Best and the Brightest.”

Many aspects of the Reno article are prescient, but one part didn’t hold up well:

“the new Establishment evident in the Obama administration is likely to govern from the middle, as did the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, which were dominated by the old Establishment. Expect moderate economic interventions and no fundamental changes in foreign policy.”

The foreign policy picture is unclear, but the economic interventions hardly qualify as “moderate”.

In this same issue of Harper’s, there are a few paragraphs describing a doctor at Rush in Chicago who was delivering a baby at the same time he was on the phone telling a resident how to do an abortion. . . how it made it into Harper’s is puzzling.
