This is what I call “passive aggressive tyranny.” It occurs when the speaker wants to shut down dialogue, but he does so in a way that disguises his totalitarian impulses. Here’s my translation for the Wallis-impaired: “I wish these people would shut up and go away so that we, the few and enlightened, can do the people’s business.” Ahhh, democracy works well when only the few and enlightened are allowed to practice it.
