Imagine if every church in America—or even one in every ten churches—would make this same offer:

Last weekend an Atlanta pastor made a promise that stunned his congregation and most of the people who heard it.

In a speech that discussed abortion, the President, and the sanctity of life, the most provocative statement from Pastor Vic Pentz of Peachtree Presbyterian Church came towards sermon’s end:

“I make a promise to you now and I don’t want you to keep this a secret,” the pastor pronounced, “the Peachtree Presbyterian Church will care for any newborn baby you bring to this church.

“We will be the family to find a home for that child, and there’s no limit on this. You can tell your friends, you can tell your family, you can tell the whole world …”

[ . . . ]

Pentz says the church will partner with Bethany Christian Services, which promotes itself as “the nation’s largest adoption agency” and will handle the “how” of making this happen.

Mother Teresa made a similar offer when speaking against abortion at the National Prayer Breakfast in 1994: “Please don’t kill the child. I want the child. Please give me the child. I am willing to accept any child who would be aborted and to give that child to a married couple who will love the child and be loved by the child. From our children’s home in Calcutta alone, we have saved over 3000 children from abortion. These children have brought such love and joy to their adopting parents and have grown up so full of love and joy.”

    But mothers choose abortion anyway…

I rather suspect that if this offer turns out to be sincere, logistically possible, and sustained, that it may have a real impact. Sure, I bet some women will still have abortions. But if the default position of those who are against abortion was “we will take the child” I think you’d win this battle.

I’m not holding my breath, but I think it would be great if this became the “pro life” movement’s strategy. Bravo.
