Each August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List, providing perspective for us old timers on how students just entering college see the world. For the Class of 2013:
4. They have never used a card catalog to find a book.
6. Salsa has always outsold ketchup.
8. Tattoos have always been very chic and highly visible.
35. Women have always outnumbered men in college.
36. We have always watched wars, coups, and police arrests unfold on television in real time.
51. Britney Spears has always been heard on classic rock stations.
54. Most communities have always had a mega-church.

Geez, am I old. I entered Beloit College when these kids were being born. I always thought there should be a list of things that a Christian would encounter while at Beloit College for four years. I must say I became a more informed Catholic, as Beloit College was inherently anti-Catholic, and I had to “fight” for my faith, as Fulton Sheen somehow understood decades before. I heard anti-Catholic quips from fellow students and profs at least once a week, which kept me investigating their cliches, and hence, I found them false. Thanks Ignatius Press–reading Janet Smith beat studying Thermodynamics and Kinetics anyday. It may seem odd that if I had gone to most any popular “catholic” college, I’m not sure if would still be catholic.
