Is there a line between transparency and compiling an enemies list? See this Washington Times exclusive: White House Collects Web Users’ Data Without Notice. In the wake of last month’s health-care email fiasco, one might wonder what the people in the administration were thinking—except that one already knows: If the Bushies did this, we’d be looking at the arrival of fascism in America, but the current occupants of the White House consider themselves so above the possibility of misuse, so uniquely trustworthy, that they are allowed, in their own minds, to do what would be nascent fascism in any one else.

If this practice had been announced in advance as being concerned with direct threats against the President’s life, etc., or with national security only (as were the wiretaps of the Bush administration), it would not seem so threatening. Considering the fact that many reasonable citizens are now fearful of this administration, one would think those in charge would take every possible opportunity to explain their actions. When practices like this are carried out “behind the scenes”, we have, in my opinion, cause for alarm.

Ok Jody, I’ve given it much thought and cannot come up with a bon mot worthy of your use of “nascent” other than “I’m shocked, morally.” Or would it be “I’m morally shocked.”?

I dunno. You would. I just wanted you to know your Hofstadter dig did not go unnoticed…
