The bioethical and transplant communities continually agitate to increase the number of donated organs by loosening standards of declaring death. Now Nature has added its hefty editorial voice to the call, even claiming that doctors today cut corners and falsely declare brain death.

If that is true, the answer to this is to rein in bad practices, not loosen the definitions!  More over at Secondhand Smoke.

We would do well to attend to the research and opinion of Dr. Alan Shewmon on the insufficiency of “brain death” as criterion of death.

I know Alan. But this advocacy is to be looser than the current definitions, which would lead to the unquestionably alive being harvested. Thanks, Reverend.
