From D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ Spiritual Depression:

Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So he stands up and says, “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.”

But if I stop listening to myself, what’s the point in talking to myself? After all, no one is listening. Except maybe someone else, who is eavesdropping. Then in order to find out what I think, I’d have to ask the eavesdropper. Perhaps he will be my friend. But can I trust him? After all, I already know he has little regard for my privacy.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but this is exactly what I do – and need to do much more of. Who knows where the unhappy thoughts come from? I need that self administered dose of reality that says, essentially, God love me, it’s not as bad as all that! to the unwelcome, unhelp and, essentially, lying thoughts that come unbidden.

    Helps me, anyway.
