Minarets are the tall spires on some mosques that serve to provide a vantage point from which the call to prayer is made. In Switzerland—where there are only four minarets in the entire country—these architectural features are now banned:

Swiss voters have supported a referendum proposal to ban the building of minarets, official results show.

More than 57% of voters and 22 out of 26 cantons – or provinces – voted in favour of the ban.

The proposal had been put forward by the Swiss People’s Party, (SVP), the largest party in parliament, which says minarets are a sign of Islamisation.

Maybe the US & other nations should follow Swiss style direct democracy?

The Swiss just voted to ban minarets on mosques and this is a great exercise of their unique form of direct democracy regardless of your views on the subject. But my question is why do the Swiss get to overrule their politicians and parliament and here in the US, we don’t have that right?

Let’s bring Swiss style direct democracy to the United States so Americans can vote on the Wall Street bailouts, government health care, whether to audit or abolish the FED, or require Congress declare war before we invade another country. Read why Switzerland is free and America is not and help restore citizen control over the US government and Congress currently under control of special interests. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/holland9.1.1.html

This from NRO. Also read the Pipes link.

Islam is a political religion that demands that all aspects of private, family, and civic life be controlled by its religious laws.

Islam is certainly testing our Western doctrine of freedom of religion. We do not yet know how to grapple with the hard truth that to preserve that freedom Islam must be denied it.

I find this to be the mark of an insecure culture that has difficulty offering any meaningful, susbstantive philosophical or theological alternative to Islam. Recall that this is the same country that has a suicide tourism industry.

We need saints, missionaries, scholars and artists more than zoning laws.

At least one Western European country still isn’t ready to capitulate to Islam.

Since when the religious majority should be asked to approve of the minority rights and religion?I thought that is a right in every western country in the 21st century.
had it been the case there would have been only 1 big religion in the world.
this is a gross breach of human rights, and freedom of worship, and a slap in the face of all moderate muslims around the world that took place in the heart of the west.

i doubt all those who cracked our head bragging about democracy will voice a small concern about this dispicable action.

and all those who say they do it why shouldnt we I say watch something else besides Fox vews..have you rednecks left your village once?..there are Giant churches in EVERY muslim country in the world (except saudi/their equivalent of Vatican)..there is a law in egypt that you cant fund building a mosque unless you fund building a church in the same neiborhood..if you walk in damascus or Karachi streets you will find hundreds of churches..
this world is full of loud ignorant people
