I had hoped that my senator, Ben Nelson from Nebraska, would stand up for the sanctity of life. His vote turned out to be decisive for moving the health care legislation forward in the Senate, and it looked as though he would hold out for something like the Stupak amendment to the Senate bill, a clear reaffirmation of Hyde amendment, the long standing principle that our tax money would not be used to pay for abortions.
But Nelson caved, and it appears that another sad chapter of the story of abortion in America is about to be written.
For an analysis of the supposed “compromise” Nelson agreed to, see the report by the National Right to Life Committee.

At times like these, I really miss Fr. Neuhaus. His last book, “American Babylon”, addressed such aberrations in what we hope for and possibly expect from right thinking legislators. I do not hold one particular political persuasion over another, but I feel that what once was truly “democratic” has long since disappeared. We must continue to pray, cajole, push, pray, hope, work, pray. Peace and God bless

Nelson has the same amount of integrity as the rest of these traitors in DC…NONE.

“The story of the day is certainly Senator Ben Nelson’s shameless perfidy—giving up his pro-life principles in return for swindling taxpayers in the other 49 states into paying all of Nebraska’s future new Medicaid costs. The deal he struck would undermine both the logic underlying the Hyde Amendment and the logic underlying the Medicaid system. There is no conceivable policy argument for the way the new bill treats Nebraska, it’s simply a case of a senator’s vote being purchased with taxpayer dollars.” – Y. Levin.

Two bumper stickers come to mind…
“America has the best politicians money can buy.” and “Politicians and diapers should be changed often, and for the same reason.”
