That Rowling’s books are considered great children’s literature demonstrates conclusively that we are in the tinfoil age of literature generally.

Joseph Bottum is wrong about the Pooh books and overvalues his objections to them. I think he confuses his annoyance with judgment and ends up being merely contrary. Sure, the clever cuteness of Milne’s writing is a bit precious, but they are still fine and unlike anything else. They are also hilarious. Is there a funnier character in children’s lit than Owl (WOL)? And E.H.Shepard’s illustrations are marvels of feeling, skill and economy. There are very few children’s books in the same class.

I think The Mysterious Benedict Society deserves a place on the list. It’s fairly new on the scene, relatively speaking …
