The Canadian philosopher and bioethicist, Margaret Somerville, has a splendid column out in the Ottawa Citizen on the importance of human exceptionalism and the need to reject animal personhood. Well worth the read. Here’s the link.

I found absolutely nothing in Margaret Somerville’s arguments in support of “human exceptionalism” to be persuasive. It boils down to: many human beings believe they are special, so they must be, unless they choose to decide some (apparently) human beings are not, then those human beings are expendable. Talk about having your cake and eating it, too.
