I find it very ironic that human "progress" and science hasn't helped infant survival at all - perhaps its even made it worse.

200 years ago, I would imagine the same proportion of fetuses or newborns died due to disease, sanitation, etc.... We now have the skill and ability to save babies, but we wind up killing the same amount, or even more, regardless.

In Buddhist terms, I suppose this is the condition of the plane of existence we live in, and this world can not get beyond it.

Joe Carter: great article! Sadly, we live in a world where the unborn can be aborted, for any reason, up to the point of birth. One rather amusing aspect to the pro-choice mentality is the presumptuous assumption that prolifers have no rational basis for being against abortion, and that it's driven entirely by religious beliefs. actually, it's the prochoice side that has no rational basis.

Statistically, the most dangerous place on earth to live is your own mother's womb. Thank you for poining this out with facts and the right touch of satire.
My daughter with Down syndrome was indeed blessed to be mine, and be the 10% of such unborn babies who live to see the light of day.
I spend my time telling the world how much she has, in return, blessed her parents. God cannot be outdone in generousity.

Who Will Remember Me

Cut from my mother's womb
By her own words
There is only pain
Then nothing
I have no heartbeat
There is no first breath
I will not run or jump
I cannot play
Mommy
Did you ever love me?
Did you wonder what I could be
Whether I was a she or he
Will anyone remember me?
I wish I could see
Someday climb a tree
I have no hopes or dreams
There is no hugs or kisses
There is no laughter or tears
There is only pain
Then nothing
Who will remember me?

Mr. Lu, you may be interested in an article from the Economist titled Gendercide: http://www.economist.com/world/international/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15636231

It doesn't directly relate to your comment about Asian Americans, but does point out that this is a truly modern phenomenon, not simply practiced by the lower classes. I would be interested in information about why this is true for Asian Americans too.

Mat Lu Can you give your source for that male/female imbalance for Asian Americans.

I should have included that in the post. It's from a study by Nicholas Eberstadt. You can find the text and graph here: http://www.aei.org/speech/25399

Waldir Isn’t 250/1000 = 25/100 = 25% = 1 in 4 (instead of one in five, which would be 20%)?

To calculate the (rough) probability, we have to add the number of aborted per live births (250) with the number of live births (1000). That gives us a pool of 1250 that each baby could be selected from. So the babies chances of being aborted are 250 out of 1250 or 1 out of 5 (1250/250 = 5).

Waldir--I think Joe's calculating it from (number of abortions) / (number of births + number of abortions), which gives you 250/1250, or 20%. This reflects the percentage of abortions out of the total number of pregnancies, both those brought to term and those terminated.
