In Storm Clouds in Ukraine, today’s “On the Square” article, George Weigel warns of what he calls “an exercise in hardball politics under the veil of public piety that was, in fact, a harbinger of danger for religious freedom, for Ukrainian democracy, and for the future of Europe.” He’s talking about a prayer service.

A bit off topic, but let me try this scenario: In 50 years, Western Europe will be an Islamic province. Russia will necessarily re-assert its influence in Eastern Europe, in order to counter the Islamic threat. Russia will re-assert its influence in the south too, for the same reason. America (or what’s left of it after the Mexicans take over the Southwest) will be Russia’s ally in the great struggle against Islam. If the Christian countries are victorious in this struggle, Russia will emerge as the world’s most powerful nation. America will be reduced to Russia’s rather weak ally and trading partner. Make any sense?

No, Feeney, that doesn’t make sense. You’ve disregarded the vast economic disparities between the U.S. and Russia and between Mexican-Americans and Anglo-Americans and between Islamic immigrants and indigenous Western Europeans. These disparities will continue to matter.

Thanks for your response. I don’t believe that “vast economic disparities” count for much in the long run. What counts is the will to survive, the will to defend onesself. I don’t believe the western countries have the courage to defend themselves against Islamic terrorists or Islamic immigration. But the Russians are a tough people, and their response will be a strong and realistic response to the threat.
