At the New Orleans Jazz Fest this year, Steve Martin, together with the Steep Canyon Rangers, makes the profound point about the interrelation of faith and art—Atheists Don’t Have No Songs, of course:

May I nominate “Imagine” by John Lennon.

John Lennon was not an atheist; only a new age spiritualist (which admittedly, is almost as reprehensible).

Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try.
No hell below us, above us only sky.

    Sounds awfully atheist to me.

    Freakwater:

Sung to old tyme Gospel beat:

    Are You Ready?

Are you ready for your new home in the sky?
Think your luck will finally turn around the minute that you die?
And all your prophets who profit only from your fears
Will they stand by and hold your hand when the end is finally near?

Are you ready to claim your great reward?
To climb those shining stairs and shake hands with your Lord?
When you look down on those poor sinners such as I
who missed our chance to be redeemed.
Will your laughter drown our cries?

Are you ready to leave this sinful world?
Would you like to read your name when that great scroll is unfurled?
And if Jesus calls you home when that angel trumpet sounds
Won’t you just leave me alone if I’m six feet underground?

    Are you ready?
    Are you ready?

Thank you, from the bottom of my utterly and completely defeated by idiots in call centers heart,

THAT was just the sort of laugh I needed today.

Funny song, but it’s not actually true.

There is at least one actual atheist hymn — not just a song, but a hymn! “Infinite Space” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

(FYI, Greg Lake wrote the lyrics; I don’t think that Emerson or Palmer are atheists themselves.)
