As proof that we Christians don’t have exclusive rights to the making of cheesy, religious-oriented videos, I give you the National Jewish Outreach Program’s reimagining of Kanye West’s “Gold Digger.”
Who knew Rosh Hashanah was inspired by the movie Pay It Forward?

Yes that is a bit twee for my taste. If we must combine religion and contemporary pop music, I prefer Matisyahu. He pushes the boundaries of cuteness, too, in his own way but also has a more serious side.

It reminded me of the Liberty Mutual television commercial where a series of people observing acts of kind response to help another person do the same themselves.
Beyond the cheesy musical performances, there were three things I didn’t like about this ad:
(1) the self-absorption of the people; there was an odd sense of “what’s in it for me” even in choosing to be charitable;
(2) the choice seemed temporary, as when the main character went to sleep, he looked forward to the occasion next year, when he’d do it again; and
(3) the reference to giving away money as an act of generosity, especially when combined with the self-absorption. It seems an act designed more for the feeling of the giver than the benefit of the needy.
There just seemed too much self-congratulation in the production rather than emphasis on investing in the common good.
