Respect to both Goldman and Wyschogrod but why then eternal enmity between the seed of the woman and the serpent? Do observant Jews have a religious duty to kill snakes, preferably by head-crushing?

David Goldman has been blessed through observance of the ancient dietary laws of Judaism. I am not surprised. God-given understanding of that which is, in the nature of things, good for human beings and for all living things is (or should be) the basis of all true religious law.
