Another interesting and well-executed post from Tim Kelleher. I've passed his Father Phleger piece from last year to a more than a few friends.

And again he's got any interesting point: The MTV awards are normally a big draw, (regardless of the questionable nominees: Lady GaGa in her stripper-wear and all the "reality show" twerps up for "Best Punch in the Face" or "Best Piddle in the Back of a Limo") as is True Blood-- especially a season finale as was broadcast this past weekend. I don't watch football, mainly because I don't care who wins, but the fact that a plain, old fashioned game is grabbing more eyeballs than the rest is worth contemplating.

"Why then the big numbers?" Take a clue from the leading name of this site and blog, "FIRST".
I submit none of the "cultural gems" you mentioned were likely to have been "first runs", and even if they had there will always be [numerous?] other opportunities to revel in their "gem-ness" - is "gemnivity" a word? Nah. But I digress.

We crave originality. That's one reason advertisers keep redo-ing their 'spots'. Even the good ones. From my reading of the "ratings" the only man-bites-dog moments come is those rare times a re-run out-rates a premiere.

And then there's the rest of your post. And Tivos.
