One doesn’t usually think of Americans owing Newman a debt, but in fact what Joseph Pearce proposes makes a lot of sense. One concrete symbol of the debt owed to Newman is the instance of “Newman Centers” at every significant university, which cater to the students there…in honor of Newman the Catholic academic man.
A possibly more important recent symbol is the Newman Society, which seeks to restore authentic Catholic teaching and practice to the Newman centers which have drifted, and to restore authentic Catholic identity to formerly Catholic universities like Notre Dame, Georgetown, and many others (whose name is Legion, SJ!)
