Here's an opening line better than at least 20 that made the list:
"After the thing was all over, when peril had ceased to loom and happy endings had been distributed in heaping handfuls and we were driving home with our hats on the side of our heads, having shaken the dust of Steeple Bumpleigh from our tyres, I confessed to Jeeves that there had been moments during the recent proceedings when Bertram Wooster, though no weakling, had come very near to despair."

I would put it at number 1 myself.

#49 made me laugh out loud in an airport. When in airports, I always seem to be reading things which make me laugh out loud. I get the oddest looks because no one else ever seems to find what they are reading the least bit amusing.

#47 Should probably be #1 if ranked in order.

I bought the books at #76 and #82 simply on the basis of their opening lines and thoroughly enjoyed them both.

I'm with Stuart on the Hobbit.
