From Jonathan McIntosh:

This is a re-imagined Donald Duck cartoon remix constructed using dozens of classic Walt Disney cartoons from the 1930s to 1960s. Donald’s life is turned upside-down by the current economic crisis and he finds himself unemployed and falling behind on his house payments. As his frustration turns into despair Donald discovers a seemingly sympathetic voice coming from his radio named Glenn Beck.

This is brilliant. At seven minutes its a bit long (for those of us whose attention spans have been shaped by the internet), but well worth watching to the end.

Uh huh. Selective quotes torn out of context for maximum defamation. Set to a cartoon to make the dishonesty seamless. “Brilliant” indeed. Brilliant manipulation.

This is paranoia artistically rendered. I am glad for the rendition, if only to have some sense of your visceral response to a phenomenon like Glenn Beck. I want no part of your fever dreams.

Is not a mash-up like this the result of precisely the brand of thoughtless chauvinism you imagine Beck represents? Imagine this kind of propaganda but with Obama as the target.

The closest that can be found on short notice, albeit with a joie de vivre the duck cartoon lacks: I Want Your Money

I’m more on Beck’s side than ever, thanks to his enemies. Western civilization eats itself. The rot is so thorough that we demonize her defenders as insane for the very act of their defending. For some, to be passionate in her defense is to be by definition a snake-oil salesman. And anything goes to defame them, even a blatant stitch-up.

Maybe you personally haven’t been touched by the recent economic catastrophe. It is harrowing. It is not all in our heads. The more you gaily make fun of us, the more you demonstrate either your ignorance or your detachment. We are scared, and that fear can easily turn into anger. Of all the discontented mobs in history, we are among the most serene, bourgeois, and rational. You are not helping us stay rational. You are what you accuse Beck of being.

Beck’s defenders often make that claim that his quotes are taken out of context. What context do “the Communists and Nazis” are out to get us sound more sane? Seriously, I’m willing to add a note to the post explaining the context for each of the quotes in the video if you are willing to provide them. (Surely you have them at hand since are sure they do not fit the context.)

Maybe you personally haven’t been touched by the recent economic catastrophe. It is harrowing. It is not all in our heads.

Did you even watch the video? It makes the astute point that Beck claims that the economic crisis was the fault not just of Wall Street fat cats but ordinary people who lost their homes and now can’t afford to pay their mortgage.

But I’m sure Beck never said that, right? Was he taken out of context on those points also?

Glenn Beck provides infotainment to the have-nots so that they miss their rightful targets. PT Barnum knew his ilk.

As anyone who has listened to Beck for more than 30 seconds can testify to, poster King ‘s analysis is far closer to the truth than Joe Carter’s.

This isn’t to say that Beck isn’t at times a shameless self promoter, or doesn’t occasionally say some stupid and ignorant things, but come on Joe Carter, get the wax out of your ears!

“What context do “the Communists and Nazis” are out to get us sound more sane?” How about in the context of talking about the history of the late thirties? I have no way of knowing what specific Beck monologue Joe is referring too (I wonder if he does either?) but I do remember Beck once talking about how the Communists and the Nazi’s were in many ways two different sides of the same coin. A rather obvious and unoriginal claim to be sure, but hardly one to arouse much controversy among claim among First Things readers, I would think?

…if it wasn’t bad enough that Donald fell under Glenn’s sway, now Mickey’s running for office on a clearly Beckian platform..

@Andre – The remix does necessarily take Beck’s comments out of their original format (a 3 or 4 hour radio show each day) but the video keeps true to Beck’s meaning and message. You prove the point of the remix perfectly by your inability to see the “Nazis and the Communists” for what they were historically – diametrically opposed ideological frameworks of the time. A few right-wing ideologically motivated “historians” have tried for years to re-write history and distance the Nazi’s hard right authoritarian system from the right-wing (where it belongs). Beck has given that fringe element a voice. You seem to have falling for it.
