I’d never heard the Staples Singers Who Took the Merry out of Christmas – thanks!

Near the top of secular Christmas songs for me is “All I Want for Christmas Is You” – same title as Mariah Carey, but different, much better, song, IMO.

What? No Vince Guaraldi Trio’s O Tannebaum? I love Sufjan but it’s definitely better than the elf dance song.

No Springsteen “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. Mariah Carey. Really?

And in the UK this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OAUs0rcsA4

provides a decent pension for the band Slade (of “Come On Feel the Noize” fame) as in December it is played in almost every shopping mall in the country ad nauseam

What about “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives or “Rudolph” by Gene Autry? How about Dino singing “Let It Snow”? By the way, Springsteen’s “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is on my list of the worst (stupidest!) pop/rock songs of all time, along with his “Born In The USA”. But that’s another story. McCartney’s “Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime” is a pretty good song.

This season I discovered a “new” secular Christmas song, “Santa Baby.” Found out it is not new at all, but was first published in 1953! Where has it been? Anyway, it’s a new fave of mine.

BTW, they do list Dino and “Let It Snow”–a fun clever song.
