“Is there anything that man didn’t do?” Christopher Kaczor’s mother asked him after hearing his report of Ralph McInerny’s funeral Mass, and that is the theme of almost everything written about him after his death one year ago.  But the admirable thing about the man wasn’t just the production, but the quality of the production in his many fields, especially those more personal, like friend and mentor. Here is a testimony from one of his students, Christopher Kaczor.

Here are some of his articles for First Things: The Writing Life (March 2006); Momento Mortimer (November 2001); and Catholicism in America (March 1990);  and one  poem, Effable.

Although I’m not Catholic, I had (and have the greatest respect for Ralph McInerny. I love his books on Thomas Aquinas. I also purchased his lectures, from the International Catholic University, on Aquinas, and learned so much. I was very saddened by his death, last year.

He was an intellectual, and moral giant.

Years ago, I read Ralph’s book “The Priest”. Very fine book about the Church and the priesthood back in the 60′s.

A generous, kind, learned, eloquent, magnanimous man with a sense of humor and a love of odd words. Someone who came from another generation when academe was not just about the present publishing madness but mostly, about discovering and communicating the truth. A specialist but also a humanist. And religious in the best sense. He leaves an example for scholars that is hard to follow.
