Disturbing statistic of the day:
In 2008, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were 55,391 total deaths in New York City. Also in 2008, according to the New York State Department of Health, there were 82,475 induced abortions in New York City.

Note that abortions can never exceed the number of deaths, but can only be one of several categories of the causes of death.
March 14th, 2011 | 10:52 am
Except (unfortunately ironically) to people that do not consider abortion a death.
It seems the tragically destined anit-abortion bill board was off the mark. It should have read ‘The most dangerous location for a New Yorker is the mother’s womb.’

New York City has a high percentage of Catholics. What is their role in this killing?
March 14th, 2011 | 12:43 pm
What is the motive for your question Dan?
March 14th, 2011 | 1:11 pm
“New York City has a high percentage of Catholics. What is their role in this killing?”
I don’t know. How many of them practice Catholicism?
March 14th, 2011 | 2:07 pm
“How many of them practice Catholicism?” And how do they define it?
For that matter, how do we define it (being Catholic). For “traditionalist” Catholics the answer is clear: we define it as the Pope does. But there are HUGE numbers of self-described Catholics who do not agree–who think the last two popes were/are completely wrong. It’s interesting, to say the least, to listen to their reasons. I believe this problem is much more difficult that most of us realize. We may have to win this war by attrition, but by then a lot of our cultural patrimony will have disappered. A really, really vexing problem.

Sorry for the typos. Have pity on me.

There is only one Catholicism.
There may be a lot of people who rebel against the fact that Catholicism, unlike some religions, cannot be cherry-picked. But it is illogical to suggest many Catholicisms. You’re either with the church or you’re not.
As far as typos: you and me both. I think I have the typo record :(

Blake: thanks for your comment. Yes, there is only one Catholicism. But which is it? I believe the recent popes have been correct on all the basic questions (abortion, homosexuality, celibacy, etc.). But have they been wrong on some issues many self-styled Catholics take very seriously? They might be. The evidence is in the sex-abuse scandals, which penetrated right into the upper ranks of the Vatican. Naturally the bishops are saying as little as possible about all this, and their defenders are embarrassed by it, but something was badly wrong. We need a huge debate about all this that is not occurring. The pope’s defenders will say he has done all he can. (And I admire this pope greatly, even more than JPII.) But the question is, how could those things have happened, and it’s no answer that the bishops just didn’t understand. A moron could have seen how bad sex abuse by priests was.

SMMTheory,
Thanks for the question. My motive is to find a way to end the abortion business. If Catholics can contribute, then that’s a good thing.
March 15th, 2011 | 11:55 am
Dan, as a non-Catholic, I’m pretty confident in saying that Catholics as a group are way ahead of you. If you’re wondering why they’re not answering your call, it’s probably because they’re so far ahead in line they didn’t hear it.
March 15th, 2011 | 1:26 pm
Dan, I do not believe you. The Catholic Church has been saying since the very beginning of Christianity that abortion is evil. So again, what is your motive for asking that specific question? I am Catholic, and I have absolutely nothing to do with the killing. For many years I have spoken out against abortion. I even earned the ire of co-workers in 1980 for speaking out against abortion.
March 16th, 2011 | 11:18 am
Pentamom,
Thank you for your response, although I didn’t fully understand it. You say “Catholics as a group are way ahead of you.” Can you explain a bit?
SMMTheory,
Thank you for your response. Rhode Island is the most Catholic state in the U.S.. This state has no pro-life representatives and no pro-life senators. New York has a few pro-life representatives, but they look lonely. I looked up Rep. Velasquez and found that she is a pro-choice Catholic. New York has no pro-life senators. My motive, I repeat, is to get the abortion business stopped. Catholics have been instrumental in keeping the abortion business functioning.
SMMTheory, thank you for speaking out against the abortion business in 1980. That was 30 years ago, but I’m sure you are still speaking out, so keep up the good work!

So far this year there have been 9 million abortions and 12 million other deaths.

I know that, here in the UK, a significant number of the abortions performed in London are on women from other parts of the UK and the Ireland.
Could this be true of New York?
March 18th, 2011 | 12:26 pm
Dan,
As a Catholic, I fully admit there are people who call themselves Catholic and support abortion–a situation very similar to the devil quoting Scripture. All sorts of people claim all sorts of things, but as Christ said, “by their fruits you shall know them”.
I’ve been to the annual pro-life Rally in D.C., and you will find no single group at that rally larger than the Catholics. To say “Catholics have been instrumental in keeping the abortion business functioning” is simply not true.
You cannot blame the Catholic church for the actions of a small minority who claim to be members, and you would need to prove that minority represents the lion’s share of pro-abortion advocacy.
There are many Catholics who’ve actively pushed for the excommunication of Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, and other so-called “pro-choice Catholics”–a term as nonsensical and self-contradictory as any I’ve ever heard. Bishops have reprimanded them and denied them communion.
Did not Jesus scold the disciples when they rebuked the exorcist who used His name to cast out demons? “No one can do a mighty deed in [Jesus'] name and then speak ill of [Him].”
What does it profit you/us by wrongfully accusing your Catholic allies in the fight against abortion?
