He is not so exceptional as you might think. The military culture is indeed different from civilian life and rightly so. But it is still a human culture and we can draw lessons from it. The military ideal of selfless service would stand us all in good stead right now.

And now that I’m grown, the speech “but only say the word” has much more meaning and impact on me.

It brings back the concept of “honor”, the military virtue more civilian leaders should be more mindful of. The lack of may be the reason why many of us are losing faith in our current leaders.
