Seems to me the Archbishop of Canterbury fails because the task set for himself (to keep the Anglican Communion united) was seen more in political terms than religious. Once a church leader sets unity above faith and morals, he has already failed. It may not have been possible for Rowan Williams to achieve any other outcome than what has happened–it may be about 400 years too late for Anglicans to get it right.
