I think the decline in support for gun control springs from a feeling that it is pointless to agitate for things that are never going to happen. So when I saw calls for tighter gun controls in the wake of the Aurora shooting, the impulse to roll my eyes was as strong as that of members of the National Rifle Association, perhaps even for the same reason. Everybody knows it’s pointless talk.
