I don't know if CT has yet reviewed McLaren's latest book (Why Did Jesus, Moses . . . Cross the Road), but the book is utterly reeks with the author's contempt for evangelicals. It purports to be about "us" reaching out to "them" (people of other religions, yet evangelicals clearly are beyond his reach. His twisted view that evangelical fear of Muslims is somehow responsible for Islamic terrorism is something out of Alice in Wonderland.

Some good points about the temptation for "liberal Christians" to downplay internal, personal transformation in favor of external, societal transformation...of course, this danger also exists for many "conservatives" as well (see the rise of the religious right).

As for McLaren, he has struggled publicly with this issue of homosexuality for years in a very open and honest way. Of course for many of us, the change comes when the presenting "issue" isn't in fact an abstract issue at all, but takes the form of someone we love...in this case, Brian's son. Jesus often used real people and real circumstances to call those around Him to see beyond the letter of the law.
