On the anniversary of the birth of the great film-maker Robert Bresson, our friend Shmuel Ben-Gad sends the link to an interview with the director. It’s in French, but subtitled. Bresson directed Diary of a Country Priest and The Trial of Joan of Arc among other films.

Here is a page with a few good quotes from Bresson. I particularly liked “The true is inimitable, the false untransformable.” and “The most ordinary word, when put into place, suddenly acquires brilliance.”

I liked Mouchette and The Diary of a Country Priest, both based on Bernanos novels, but I have not yet seen the one about Joan of Arc. I intend to! Profound works. Thanks for the reminder.

thanks so much for this bit of culture. I enjoy and admire French literature and film—loved Bernanos’ book and now must see Bresson’s film.

I thought the interview was rough for Bresson! He looked nervous and who could blame him…didn’t it look like an interrogation? France Roche was intimidating, at least to me.
