I am not as sanguine as David N over this development. It seems equally likely that self-tatooing is a way that some young people today can flatter their moral vanities by finding ways to identify with genuine instances of victimhood. The young woman's self-reported dialogue with the Israeli police officer lends credence to this, in my opinion, as does her (obviously false) assertion that no one in her generation remembers the Holocaust.

On the other hand, it reminds me that the cross was once an instrument associated with shame, loathing, and suffering -- which became at the hands of the early Christians a symbol of love, hope, and renewal. Perhaps something similar is happening with the concentration camp tatoos.

I guess only God can see into the complex reasonings that motivate people. We see them for what they really are in His good time.
