It is a curious fact that the three principle architects of the EU were all Catholics.  Something else they shared in common was thatt hey were all from marginal German-speaking areas: West German Chancellor Adenauer (Rhineland), French Prime Minister Robert Schumann (born in Luxembourg of parents from Lorraine) and Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi (Trentino Alto Adige).
