Pope Benedict XVI? I initially read the line as Joe did, transposing the two last numerals. But somehow I couldn’t square the Pope Benedict I’d read about with an earthy sense of humor. Pope Benedict XIV may have had a good sense of humor, but he was definitely not German. He was an Italian who held the papacy in the mid-18th century.

Except that the funny guy was Benedict the Fourteenth (XIV) not Benedict the Sixteenth (XVI). Sorry. I think this guy has a keen sense of humor but it’s very professor-y and German.
