I am pleased to hear that Old South Church is thriving after so many centuries of existence. However, the Bay Psalm Book is more than just a hymnal. The Psalms are, after all, a book of the Bible, and the Puritans and other Reformed Christians understood themselves to be singing the Psalms themselves, albeit in metered translations. In that sense a metrical psalter is indeed a part of the Bible.

The UCC has abandoned Christ? Have you been to a UCC church lately? The preaching at Old South Church is couldn’t be more Christ-centric or Bible based. And FYI, the membership of Old South Church is growing. 21 new members were welcomed into the church on December 9, 2012. BTW, the Bay Psalm Book is a hymnal, not the Bible and therefore not a holy book, per se.

I think the larger story here is that when a church like the UCC abandons Christ, it’s parishioners eventually abandon the church and take their money with them. Let’s hope the Bay Psalm Book winds up in more faithful hands as it almost must.
