This cannot be good news:

In Showtime’s first pilot order for 2013, the pay cable network has greenlighted a high-profile drama from Oscar nominees Paul Attanasio and Ridley Scott. Titled The Vatican, the project is described as a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. Said to evoke The Sopranos and Upstairs Downstairs, the series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world’s most hidden institutions.

It certainly doesn’t bode well, no, although at least there is a provision made for “mysteries and miracles.” Before going into full outrage mode, I would be interested in actually watching an episode or two. Ridley Scott has made some good, thoughtful films, as has Paul Attanasio, and there is nothing in their work to date that marks them out as anti-Catholics. It’s certainly not offensive that someone considers the Holy See important enough to dedicate a TV series to, and I’m willing to maintain a humble and playful attitude toward this sort of thing, as long as it is not objectively libelous. Perhaps it might even pique someone’s curiosity, and lead them deeper into the Church herself?

A quickness to taking offense is itself a form of incivility.

Well, Ridley Scott made “The Kingdom of Heaven,” which portrays medieval Christianity with every crudely negative and hostile cliche and caricature in the book (while at the same time, painting Islam in glowing, politically correct colors) – so I am not so hopeful as Patrick.

Wow, a series about endless meetings and byzantine bureaucratic paper mazes and status reports?

    Where do I sign?

Oh… it’s based on something else, not the Vatican. Sorry.
