Bill Bannon, shortcuts are used in reporting on studies. It is assumed that people understand that no study finds all people in any group the same in any characteristic. Most measures are bell curves, so that most are in the middle and few are on the ends. The differences between groups mean that the middle of the bell curves are in different places. "Striking contrasts" between groups means large differences in the averages, or maybe small, statistically significant averages but the researchers want to get noticed. It may be that most of the only children in Jesus's day were little emperors. It may be that Abraham's son Isaac was a little emperor once his half-brother was kicked out. But the study says nothing about whether any individual fit that description, since both groups are distributed over a wide range of variation.
