My understanding is the whole kerfuffle came from the question each cardinal is bound to get from his local press--do you think you will be elected? Cdl Turkson reportedly said something like, "I'll be elected if they elect me." That's polite code for "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer." However, the media will make anything they want out of any story, as we know.

No doubt every cardinal gave the same sort of humble answer to the inevitable stupid question. These guys already have an impossible job; why would a sane man want the ultimate impossible job?

The logic of this, for example,

Despite his surprising candour on the subject of succeeding Pope Benedict XVI, Turkson was “quick” to take a conservative line on controversial issues such as gay marriage and other “alternative lifestyles”, the Telegraph says.

escapes me. How is candor about one’s possible future opposed to being quick to “take a conservative line,” aka support Church teaching?

Candid responses to questions about wanting to become the next pope? Surprising.

Advocating traditional views on gay marriage and “alternative lifestyles”? Not surprising.
