“I was glad to have hit the first home run in this park. God only knows who will hit the last,” said Babe Ruth of the old Yankee stadium.  Technically that was José Molina, but I like to think it was Benedict XVI.  While we’re all swapping tales, I saw him in that stadium in 2008 just before it was decommissioned, and I’ll admit to being proud of the above photograph I took there.  I can’t remember if that was before or after they released the doves.  Seriously.  And, how glad I was to meet up with my fellow Protestants just after the Mass!

Permit one more evangelical to register gratitude for this pope.  He taught us, among many things, not to fear the Christologically-grounded analogy of being, and there are few better gifts than that.

I’m reminded of the old quiz, “While the Yankees are rightfully proud of their history, which four former Cardinals had plaques dedicated to them at the old Yankee Stadium?”

    Answer:

    Roger Maris.
    Miller Huggins.
    Pope Paul VI.
    Pope John Paul II.

Well. I learned something–both what “analogy of being” is and that it has been attacked, and now hopefully is being restored to Protestants. Many is the time I have adverted to the analogy in prayer, and it seems to me that contemplating beauty in creation leads naturally to appreciating the one source of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness. (Also leads to wonder at how atheists can say there’s “not evidence” for God. Are they blind?)

Now I know what to call this prayer.
