I was amazed and disturbed when I realized that “Tom Wright,” the author of the very wrongheaded column in the Guardian, is the much-admired (including by me) N. T. Wright. Admittedly, John Humphrys is condescending and prosecutorial in his interview of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor. But Wright seems to suggest the best defense, when dealing with an aggressive journalist, is a good tu quoque offense. I imagine (and hope) that Wright dashed off this piece in a fit of pique and is now, or soon will be, embarrassed by it.
