Fr. Maciej Zieba, O.P., the author of the new book Papal Economics: The Catholic Church on Democratic Capitalism, from Rerum Novarum to Caritas in Veritate , is presenting a lecture entitled “The Theory and Practice of Solidarity” here in our New York offices on Wednesday, November 13, 2013.

Trained as a physicist, Fr. Zieba became active in the Polish Solidarity movement in 1980 and edited an underground newspaper. Ordained a priest in 1987, Fr. Zi?ba was provincial superior of the Dominicans of Poland from 1998-2006 and has served on the Synod of Bishops for Europe, on the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and as director of the European Solidarity Centre.

Fr. Zieba, with Michael Novak, Rocco Buttiglione, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, and George Weigel, also founded the Tertio Millennio Institute, which is dedicated “to deepen[ing] the dialogue on Catholic social doctrine between North American students and students from the new democracies of central and eastern Europe.”

Having earned his doctorate from the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, Father has lectured extensively on economics, theology, and philosophy, and is no stranger to the magazine .
