It’s not the ugliest church in the world, Saints Peter and Paul in Pierre, South Dakota:

ssppchurchpicture

which we saw this weekend, while visiting my grandmother in Pierre.

Then again, it’s not the prettiest church, either, and every time we drive by, my wife asks how come only St. Peter gets a statue when the name of the church is Peter and Paul.

Prairie church architecture in its standard-issue modern style. Lord help us.

But a very successful church, nonetheless: expanded yet again on every visit we make to Pierre.

Wanna start collecting pictures of ugly and pretty churches with me, Sally? We can have a contest. With a prize awarded to the winners.

Only Catholic churches? Or others? I have seen some fascinating specimens here in Memphis. Church NAMES could form their own contest. Let’s just say that there are lots and lots of ways to combine the words “Temple,” “Anointed,” “Deliverance,” and “Praise.”

I would say that this church you offer is about twenty times prettier than my parish church, love it though I do. I do not love it for its architecture, let’s just put it that way.

So how about a picture of your church, Sally?

As soon as I get back, I’ll take one and post it. She’s a beauty. Sort of the Susan Boyle of church architecture.

St. Patrick’s, Gainesville, Florida — until they moved into their pleasant if slightly spartan new church building this year. I don’t have a picture and can’t find one on line. The stained glass (chunks of thick colored glass set in mortar) is surprisingly attractive; otherwise, inside and out, the place is hideous, a gray painted concrete parallelepiped with a very few frills, acoustic-tile hanging ceiling, undistinguished modern altar. It helped to remember what they kept in the tabernacle.
