1 Kings 1

1 Kings 1 August 13, 2004

Here is a very rough, very wooden and literal, translation of 1 Kings 1.

Now the king David was old, entering in days.
And they covered him in clothes
And it was not warm to him.
And his servants said to him,
?Let them seek for my lord the king a young woman, a virgin
And let her stand before the king
And let her be to him an attendant/stewardess
And let her lie in your lap
And it will be warm to my Lord the king.?E
And they sought a beautiful young woman within all the boundaries of Israel.
And they found Abishag the Shunammite
And they caused her to enter to the king.
Now the young woman very beautiful.
And she was to the king an attendant,
And she served him.
But the king did not know her.

Now Adoniyah, son of Haggith, lifting himself up, saying,
?I, even I, will rule as king.?E
And he made for himself chariots and horsemen and fifty men, runners before him.
Now his father did not trouble him from his days, saying,
?Why according to this have you done??E
Now also he himself was very good in form.
Now she bore him after Absalom.
And were his words with Joab son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest.
And they helped after (stood by) Adonijah.
Now Zadoq the priest and Benayahu son of Yehoyada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and the Gibborim which were to David
And they were not with Adoniyahu.

And sacrificed Adoniyahu sheep and cattle and fatted cattle on the stone of the Zoheleth (the Slithering), which is beside En-rogel.
And he called all his brothers, sons of the king,
and to all the men of Judah, the servants of the king.
But Nathan the prophet and Benayahu and the Gibborim
And Solomon his brother he did not call.

And said Nathan to Bath-sheba, mother of Shlomoh, saying,
?Have you not heard that rules as king Adoniyahu, son of Haggith
And our Lord David does not know?
Now you, come.
Let me advise you please (with) advice.
And save your soul and the soul of your son Shlomoh.
Come, and enter to the king David
And say to him,
?Have not you, my lord the king, sworn to your maidservant,
To say that Shlomoh your son will rule as king after me
And he will sit on my throne?
And why rules Adoniyahu??E
Behold you still wording there with the king
And I myself will enter after you
And I will fill up your words.?E

And entered Bath-Sheba to the king in the inner room
Now the king was very old.
And Abishag the Shunammite serving the king.
And bowed Bath-sheba and prostrated herself to the king.
And the king said,
?What to you??E
And she said to him,
?My lord, you yourself swore by Yahweh your God to your maidservant
?That Shlomoh your son will rule as king after me
And he himself will sit on my throne.?E
?But now, behold, Adoniyah rules as king
And you, my lord the king, you do not know.
And he sacrificed bulls and fatted cattle and sheep to abundance
And he called to all the sons of the king and to Abiathar the priest and to Joab commander of the hosts
But to Shlomo your servant he did not call.
But you yourself, my lord the king, eyes of all Israel (are) on you
To announce to them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And it will be as soon as sleeps my lord the king with his fathers
And I will be, even I and my son Shlomoh, sinners.?E

And behold: while she still speaking with the king
And Nathan the prophet entered.
And they announced to the king, saying,
?Behold Nathan the prophet.?E
And he entered before the King
And he prostrated himself to the king with his face on the land.
And Nathan said,
?My lord the king have you said
?Adoniyahu will rule as king after me
And he himself will sit on my throne?E
?For he has gone down this day
And he sacrificed bulls and fatted cattle and sheep to abundance.
And he called to all the sons of the king,
And to the commander of the host and to Abiathar the priest.
And behold: eating and drinking before him.
And they are saying,
?Live the king Adoniyahu!?E
?But to me, to myself your servant and to Zadoq the priest and to Benayahu son of Yehoyada and to Shlomo your servant he did not call.
Has this thing been from my lord the king?
And you did not cause your servants to know who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him??E

And answered the king David
And said,
?Call to me to Bath-sheba.?E
And she entered before the king.
And she stood before the king.
And the king swore and said,
?Life of Yahweh, who redeemed my life from all distress.
For just as I swore to you by Yahweh God of Israel, saying,
?For Shlomoh your son shall rule as king after me
And he himself will sit on my throne in my place.?E
For thus I will do this day.?E
And bowed Bath-sheba faces (to the) land
And she prostrated herself to the king
And she said,
?Love my lord the king David forever.?E

And said the king David,
?Call to me to Zadoq the priest and to Nathan the prophet and to Benayahu son of Yehoyada.?E
And they entered before the king.
And the king said to them,
?Take with you the servants of your lord
And cause to ride Shlomoh my son on the mule which is to me.
And cause him to come down to Gihon.
And anoint him there, Zadoq the prist and Nathan the prophet, as (to) king over Israel.
And blow on the Shofar,
And say,
?Live the king Shlomo!?E
And ascend after him
And enter
And he will sit on my throne.
And he himself will rule as king in my place.
Now him I commanded to be prince over Israel and over Judah.?E
And answered Benayahu son of Yehoyada the king
And he said,
?Amen.
Thus says Yahweh God of my lord the king
Just as Yahweh was with my lord the king,
Thus he will be with Shlomo
And he will make greater his throne than the throne of my lord the king David.

And went down Zadoq the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benayahu son of Yehoyada and the Cereti and the Peleti
And they cased Shlomoh to ride on the mule of the king David
And they caused him to come to Gihon.
And took Zadoq the priest the horn of oil from the tent
And anointed Shlomoh
And they blew on the Shofar
And said all the people,
?Live the king Shlomoh!?E
And ascended all the people after him
Now the people fluting on flutes
And rejoicing great joy
And split the earth with their voice.

And heard Adoniyahu and all the called ones which (were) with him
And they finished to eat.
And heard Joab the voice of the Shofar
And said,
?Why the voice of the city makes an uproar??E
And his still wording and behold, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest entered
And said Adoniyahu
?Enter, for a man of valor (are) you
And good you news you bring.?E
And answered Jonathan and said to Adoniyahu,
?No.
Our Lord the king David has caused to rule as king Shlomoh.
And sent with him the king Zadoq the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benayahu son of Yehoyada and the Cereti and the Peleti
And he caused him to ride on the mule of the king.
And anointed him did Zadoq the priest and Nathan the prophet as king in Gihon.
And they ascended from there rejoicing
And the city makes an uproar.
This the voice which you heard.
And also Shlomoh sits on the throne of the kingdom.?E
And also have entered the servants of the king to bless their lord the king David, saying,
?May your God make good the name Shlomoh
More than your name.
And make great his throne more than your throne.?E
And prostrated himself the king on his bed.
And also according to this says the king,
?Blessed be Yahweh Go
d of Israel
who gave this day sitting on my throne.
And my eyes seeing.?E
And they shuddered
And they arose, all the called ones which (were) to Adoniyahu
And they went, each to his way.

Now Adoniyahu feared from the presence of Shlomoh
And he rose
And he went
And he took hold on the horns of the altar.
And it was announced to Shlomoh saying,
?Behold, Adoniyahu fears the king Shlomoh
And behold he takes hold on the horns of the altar, saying,
?Let it be sworn to me according to the day of king Shlomoh
If he kills his servant with the sword.?E
And said Shlomoh
?If he will be as a son of valor
his single hair shall not fall to the land.
But if evil is found in him
Then he dies.?E
And sent the king Shlomoh
And they caused him to go down from on the altar
And he entered
And he prostrated to the king Shlomoh.
And said Shlomoh to him,
?Go to your house.?E
