Scattered Thoughts

Scattered Thoughts September 30, 2004

My son Christian noted a couple of cool things in the Bible this morning:

1) The law of the firstborn requires that the firstborn male of unclean animals like donkeys either be redeemed or killed: “every first opening of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck” (Ex 13:13). Jesus rides to Jerusalem on a donkey. If we assume that the donkey is a firstborn (which is not explicit), then Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a redeemed donkey, a donkey ?Ean unclean beast ?Eredeemed with a lamb. Hmmm.

2) Matthew records that God appeared to Joseph in a dream to assure him that he should take Mary as his wife. Then it says, “Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took her as his wife.” Christian pointed out that this is the same sequence for Adam: He goes into death-sleep, and then rises to take a wife. Mary is the new Eve, who is about to give birth to the Seed of the Woman. Joseph is a new Adam, who yields place to his son.
