Your post dealt with how collectors follow trends in the art market in order to make a “score,” rather than purchase based on aesthetic criteria, dubious or no. When I came across the kitty art show piece my only hope was to alert those collectors out there that may be perusing FT – legions, I imagine – of the hottest new trend. Yes, lolcats may lack a certain aesthetic sophistication, but that shouldn’t matter much to those with deep pockets racing out ahead of the curve. And truthfully, some of the art seemed no worse than Jeff Koons. Sorry my little jest seemed obscure. And I thought the Charles Saatchi reference tied it all together!
