Cheeks,
A fine piece with your enthusiasms at full throttle. Although there is much loathsome about the arts edifice and its titanium balloon dogs, having rambled through studios of the progeny away at school a few years ago, I sense something interesting happening. Perhaps it is because some of these kids have parents who might have listened to Led Zeppelin and the Stones but they also listen to Prez Prado, Luis Prima and any Delta Blues they can lay their wrinkling hands on too! To quote Luis: "WhadamI..Lasagna?"

The music was much, much better and bohemians were more bohemian. And I certainly agree that the "better days" continued through most of the 60s. Teen hotspots were certainly more jumpin'...
This, much more the farm and all that, is nostalgia that I can believe in. Of course, that may because I'm even older than 57. Great post, Bob.

Ah, those 'socialist', post-New-Deal halcyon days, when the rich were paying way too much in taxes, financial firms were held in gyves, people could support a family on factory wages, and some of the rest of us enjoyed a gradual increase in our standard of living. Ain't seen much o' that lately.

The music (the American arts in general) were much better then than they have ever been since the early 70s. We originated bebop, soul, Hank Williams, modal jazz, free jazz, Sinatra, Elvis, Ella, Chicago Blues, the British Invasion (American-inspired), all the glories of 60s experimentation in 64-69, our own post-European avant-garde classical music (Babbitt, Carter, etc.) There was a vibrancy in our culture that has vanished. Current Young Republicans have no idea. The American popular and high arts have been totally moribund since the Reagan years -- just a coincidence, surely.

I'm 57, and remember the 50s and 60s well. It was a much better country in those days, even given Jim Crow and McCarthy, etc. The "conservative" repudiation of those years is something I couldn't sympathize less with. I have no desire to turn the clock back to the robber-baron era, if we haven't done so already.

I don't remember Wiggle Wobble, but I'm sure it's as good as you say.
