I just look at where Obama comes from, Carl. The liberal establishment, that evanescent mirage, might indeed have unlimited self-deception at its command. But the far Left groundwater beneath its feet has long preached hatred of America. Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky being just two off the more visible figures in the pulpit. But Obama spent twenty years way beyond Zinn and Chomsky in the cloud of James Cone's "black theology," which combines not only Marxism and black nationalism, but is black supremacist as well.

Whatever Obama is, he is not merely of the liberal establishment, far from it. He will never say what he is really about. He lies so often and with such fluidity that it is even more of a lifestyle for him than it is for Bill Clinton. So you have to look at where he spent his time. And I say that no one stays someplace like that church for twenty years unless they love it and want it.

Au contraire, commenter with the shameful and (shamefully anoynmous) byline, James is getting it from Obama's entire career so far, as symbolized and crystalized in that one interview.

Mr. McPhillips, I respectfully do not buy any of the "Obama is trying to damage this or that aspect of America for broader leftist purposes of more radical reshaping later on" theories. I think rather you need to posit the power of self-deception, practiced en masse by the liberal establishment.

I hear even Obama's opponents saying how intelligent he is, but I've yet to see the evidence for that. On the other hand, I think that he is smart enough to know the destructive effect this health care thing will have. So maybe it is time to consider the possibility that destruction is one of his goals. Why would we forget how much the Left truly detests America and not at least try to put that frame around Obama's efforts, just to see if it fits? He is, after all, more grounded in the far Left than has been generally acknowledged.
