It seems that just weeks before the general election that old leftist rag, Time Magazine, has flushed out evidence of militant, right wing, militia types running around my neck of the woods:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2022516,00.html

As it turns out about fifteen years ago or so I attended an Ohio militia meeting down in Coshoctan, Ohio. Well, I had a good time and met some nice fellows (some radicals too) who were, by and large, hard working taxpayers, with some military experience in their younger days. These gentlemen all shared a distrust of the Clinton administration.

One interesting note was that the ‘second’ in command of the Ohio State Militia (that was the name of the organization) was a large African-American gentleman married to a large blond white woman who ran about the room signing people up to a news letter. Later I found out that about 30% of the men participating in the event were FBI agents and informants, including the African American gentleman and his wife.

Never- the-less a fun time was had by all. If I remember correctly the Waco massacre pretty much drove the sundry state militias underground. That is until Time’s article linked here. I dunno but it strikes me as a political ploy, a maladroit effort by the effete Left to ‘scare’ the public. Truth is I kind of liked those ‘militia’ guys and I sure couldn’t tell the real militia members from those FBI agents with Ivy League educations.

I sleep soundly in my bed at night , vouchsafed by the knowledge that my government infiltrated a band of dangerous Quakers and monitored their nefarious aims before issuing a succinct press release to , among others, the aficionados of alarm at Time Magazine.

BOO! Thus sayeth the oracles at the DHS.

Breaking News: the FBI doesn’t recruit from Ivy League schools. Far from it. It seeks out lower-level schools—no respectable prospective CIA employee would give the FBI a second thought. While both agencies are dysfunctional in the extreme, it’s hard to beat the FBI year in and year out for its deficiencies. Although “Burn After Reading” is both hilsarious and a corruscating look at the CIA. So choose your poison.

    From said Time article-
“Readier for bloodshed than at any time since at least the confrontations in the 1990s in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas, the radical right has raised the threat level against the President and other government targets.”

But wait, weren’t the Ruby Ridge and Wacco events initiated, not by the militias, but by over zealous (nay, paranoid) government agencies?

JohnRDC, you got me, my comment was thick snark, but thank you re: “Breaking News: the FBI doesn’t recruit from Ivy League schools”. That’s good news for our community colleges.
Rev. Spomer: yes, bibles and guns. I’m afraid Imam Barry has you pegged and yes, our fun feds are accountable for those two atrocities.

“I dunno” but maybe it’s incumbent on you to try to prove this rather than than just throwing it out there with no evidence?

Don’t know what the “Imam Barry” thing is about. No extremism here!

You do realize that one of the points of being an undercover FBI agent is that you can’t tell them from the others? That’s why they call it “undercover”.

JohnRDC, one other point: Muldar and Scully work for the FBI and we all know how good they are! And, Scully’s a dr. so there!

A: dude (dudette?) c’mon now, we’ve all had enough of “The One”..now haven’t we? And jeez, if we can’t have a little fun with our political figures (Imam Barry!) well then you folks on the Left are way to uptight…as we used to say. Also, “A” should you have feelings of loss and anxiety following the upcoming elections just send a ‘comment’ in and I’ll do my best to help you with whatever psychopathology you contract. Our slogan: “You’re Never Alone, with PoMoCon!”

jason taylor: don’t you play for the Dolphins? Anyway I said “after” the event we learned of the nefarious doings of the gummint (see “Enemy of the State”). Personally, I think it was yet another example of good old Right Wing paranoia, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Say it isn’t so! J.J. and Helen Johnson were on the FIB payroll?! The brotha went before Congress to testify in favor of the militia movement.

Well anyway. I hung out with some militia folk back in the mid-90s (part of my own college rebellious phase). Met Koernke from the Michigan Militia, and sundry other folks who are now household names in the “patriot” world. These were great people, and a lot of fun. I didn’t shoot any guns or “train” with them, only went to public informational meetings. By the way, I am an African American gentleman too, albeit not a “large” one.

Lengthy screed mocking the hysteria over the “Hutaree” bunch earlier this year, and offering some eye-opening info besides. (Warning: I am not a “conservative” proper, nor very pomo.)
