It is not deception but perception which is “at the heart” of these candidate booms. Conservatives perceived Cain to be a gut-level conservative businessman – they were right. They perceive in Gingrich an ability to make the conservative case on the stump – again, they are right.

The deception comes later; it is a mechanism to protect the perception.
