Carl, I too was directed to your excellent piece via the Kinks Fan site (I am a member of the Official Kinks Fan Club).
This song is one of my all time favorites and your description is brilliant. Thanks.
I lived in London for a short time in the 60s and I now have to pass through it, via Waterloo Station, to see our grandchildren. The song brings back great memories of those remarkable (for music) 60s days.

Thanks Steve...there certainly is something healing about it that eludes any lyrical analysis. To my shame I first heard the song only a couple years ago, but it's melody already belongs to my personal likely-to begin-humming-out-of-the-blue top twenty.

Carl, I came across this via a kinks fan site, and I am so pleased I did. Very insightful and informative. Waterloo Sunset is my all time favorite song, and I must listen to it at least once a week. When a certain mood takes me, this beautiful song is like oxygen. What I hear is something so beautiful and fragile, that it seems a miracle that it exists at all for those few minutes. Thanks, steve
