Young people do get the bulk of their political information from a liberal leaning media. However, the center-right message that you refer to in your conclusion is not being shouted down by the left, it is being shouted down by the right. And that turns young moderates away.

Thanks for the link, Pete. Of course, Jonathan Chait being Jonathan Chait, he couldn’t help but write the piece with lots of subtle derisory aimed at conservatives. But after reading Carl’s comment, the reason for that becomes clear: Chait isn’t writing to expose, but to claim victory. Like George Lakoff, he recognizes that either ignoring or laughing at conservative arguments will prevent anything but dismissiveness. So when conservatives talk about the societal value of strong traditions, or of the deleterious effect of unlimited willfulness, it just sounds like more “crazy” religious talk, and Chait is perfectly happy with that.

Good stuff Pete, but I think your framing of the (important) Chait piece is not the most obvious one for conservatives.

The obvious take-away, is as Ben Shapiro of Big Hollywood http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Hollywood/2012/08/20/New-York-Chait-admits-Hollywood-far-left put it, is that here we have a major liberal pundit/journalist flat-out admit large portions of the conservative complaint against bias in film and television, even going to so far to label it propaganda, but then is just as cool as a cucumber about it.

Years, and years of conservatives who complained about this biased being mercilessly mocked on the left, and Chait never said a word in their defense. And now with this piece he looks those conservatives in the eye, and basically says, “Yeah, my liberal allies called you morons and haters and uptight for saying this all those years, but I’ve known all along you were 95% right about it. Hey, it’s just an advantage my side has, and I’m cool with it.”

I have no answers to the problems you raise, other than to say as per usual that if everyone were to listen to the Paladins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wKCgCayCEw, things would sort themselves out.
